The No No List

The No-No List

By Heather Alexander

There are over 80,000 chemicals on the market today. Only around 200 of those have been tested for human safety.

There are so many household cleaners on the market today with what people call "nasty" ingredients. Does anyone ever really go into what those chemicals are and why?! Not really.

So lets cover those "nasties" that are common that you will never find in our products and why they are unhealthy for you.

  • 1,4-Dioxane - Typically found in paint, cosmetics, deodorants, cleaners, and detergents. Research has shown that exposure to this chemical can increase the risk of cancer. It can also cause damage cells in your liver, kidney, and respiratory system.
  • Ammonia - Typically found in plastics, textiles, pesticides, household cleaners and industrial-strength cleaning supplies. Research has shown that exposure to this chemical can cause irreversible harm, especially lung damage and blindness.
  • Chlorine - Typically found in dishwasher detergents, laundry detergents, and toilet bowl cleaners. Research has shown that exposure can cause difficulty with breathing, eye irritation, and irritation to the skin.

  • Ethylene Oxide Typically found in solvents, pharmaceuticals, adhesives, and cosmetics. Research has found that exposure can cause respiratory issues, cancer, reproductive issues, and more.
  • Formaldehyde Metals - Typically found in glues, disinfectants, and auto parts. Research has found that exposure can cause abnormalities of heart rhythm, restlessness, and low blood pressure.
  • Mineral Oil - Typically found in baby lotions, ointments, and cosmetics. Research shows that it can interfere with absorption of vitamins.

  • Optical Brighteners - Typically found in laundry detergents. Research shows exposure to optical brighteners can cause irritation to your skin.
  • Phosphates - Typically found in household cleaners, foods, and drinks. Research hows too much phosphate exposure can make your bones brittle and give you early onset osteoporosis.
  • Parabens - Typically found in shaving creams, makeup, lotions, and hair care products. Research shows exposure can cause disruption of the hormones, fertility, and increase the risk for cancer.

  • Phthalates - Typically found in meats, and plastics. Research shows exposure can cause reproductive issues, neurological issue, and other endoctrine disrupters.
  • SLS - Typically found in  floor cleaners, toothpaste, car wash soaps, asprins, and bubble baths. Research shows exposure can cause skin reactions like eczema and dermatitis.
  • Volatile Synthetic Solvants - Typically found in pesticides, aerosol sprays, personal care products, room deodorizers, and new furniture. Research has found that exposure can lead to headaches, loss of coordination, damage to the liver, kidney, or nervous system.
  • Triclosan - Typically found in toothpaste, mouthwashes, facial cleansers, deodorants, cosmetics, dishwashing liquids, and detergents. Research has found that exposure can lead to sensitivities to certain foods, skin irritations, and endoctrine system disrupters.
Shew ... are you exhausted? I AM! I am in love with my Norwex and know that my family, myself, and my pets will not be exposed to any of these "no-no" chemicals.

Tell me ... look at your products you use ... do you see one of these ingredients in there?
